What Is a Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)?
A Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving images of the heart. A handheld device (transducer) is passed gently over the chest, sending sound waves through the chest wall to produce detailed visual information about heart anatomy and function.
TTE provides a comprehensive assessment of:
- Heart chamber size and wall motion
- Heart valve structure and function
- Heart pumping (ejection fraction)
- Blood flow patterns
- Detection of fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
It is safe, radiation-free, and typically well-tolerated by patients.
When Is a TTE Recommended?
Your clinician may recommend a TTE if you experience symptoms including:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Persistent fatigue or low exercise tolerance
- Heart murmur or abnormal heart sounds
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure with cardiac risk concerns
