A Personalised Approach to Your Health

Advanced Thyroid Scan Services in North London

At MedPlus Clinic, we provide comprehensive thyroid scanning – a specialised nuclear medicine imaging test that evaluates the function and structure of the thyroid gland. Thyroid scans help identify abnormalities such as nodules, overactivity (hyperthyroidism), underactivity (hypothyroidism), and other structural or functional concerns that may not be visible with standard imaging alone.

This safe, detailed diagnostic test can be crucial in forming an accurate diagnosis and guiding effective treatment plans for patients with thyroid concerns.

Detailed Thyroid Function Assessment

Thyroid scans provide both structural and functional information, helping identify overactive or underactive areas of the thyroid gland.

Clinician-Led Diagnostic Imaging

All thyroid scans at MedPlus Clinic are arranged and reviewed by experienced, UK-registered clinicians.

Safe, Low-Dose Nuclear Imaging

The scan uses a small, medically approved amount of radioactive tracer, making it a safe and well-tolerated diagnostic test.

Accurate Diagnosis & Treatment Guidance

Thyroid scans support precise diagnosis of thyroid conditions and help guide personalised treatment and follow-up care.

What Is a Thyroid Scan?

A thyroid scan is a type of nuclear imaging that uses a small, safe dose of radioactive tracer to assess how the thyroid gland absorbs and processes iodine. A specialised camera detects the tracer, producing detailed images that show:

  • Thyroid size and shape
  • Functional activity of the thyroid tissue
  • Areas of overactive or underactive thyroid function
  • Presence and behaviour of thyroid nodules

Because thyroid cells naturally absorb iodine, this scan gives clinicians valuable information about gland performance and potential disease.

When Is a Thyroid Scan Recommended?

A thyroid scan may be recommended if you experience symptoms or conditions such as:

  • Goitre (enlarged thyroid)
  • Nodules or lumps in the neck
  • Unexplained weight changes
  • Signs of hyperthyroidism (e.g., rapid heartbeat, tremor)
  • Signs of hypothyroidism (e.g., fatigue, cold intolerance)
  • Abnormal thyroid blood test results
  • Your clinician will determine if a thyroid scan is appropriate based on your clinical history and other investigations.
  • A small dose of radioactive tracer is administered, usually orally or via injection.
  • After a short uptake period, a specialised gamma camera captures images of your thyroid gland.
  • The clinician reviews the scan images to evaluate function and structure.
  • Results are interpreted in the context of your symptoms, blood tests, and clinical findings.

The procedure is generally well tolerated, non-invasive, and performed in a calm clinical setting.

  1. A brief discussion of your symptoms and clinical reason for scanning.

  2. The ultrasound scan is performed with gel applied to the skin; most patients experience no discomfort.

  3. Your clinician interprets the images and discusses findings with you.

  4. A report is prepared to support diagnosis and further care planning.

Most ultrasound appointments take 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
