Chaperone Policy
Last updated: December 2025
At MedPlus Clinic, we are committed to providing care that respects our patients’ dignity, privacy, and safety at all times.
This policy explains your right to have a chaperone present during medical or dental examinations and treatments.
1. What Is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained member of our clinical team who is present during an examination or procedure to:
Support you
Ensure your comfort and dignity
Promote safety for both patient and clinician
2. When Are Chaperones Used?
A chaperone may be offered or required in the following situations:
During intimate or sensitive examinations or procedures
When you request a chaperone
When a clinician believes a chaperone is necessary for patient safety or professional protection
In both medical and dental settings, a nurse or clinical assistant is usually present and may act as the chaperone.
3. Your Rights
You have the right to:
Request a chaperone at any time
Decline a chaperone, unless one is clinically required
Ask for an examination or procedure to stop at any point
Your wishes will always be respected where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
4. If You Decline a Chaperone
If you choose not to have a chaperone present:
The clinician will explain the role and purpose of a chaperone
Your decision will be respected whenever appropriate
Your preference will be documented in your clinical records
In some circumstances, an examination or procedure may need to be postponed if proceeding without a chaperone would be considered unsafe.
5. Confidentiality & Professional Conduct
All chaperones at MedPlus Clinic are trained to:
Maintain strict confidentiality
Act professionally and respectfully at all times
Support both the patient and the clinician during the consultation
